Throughout the ages, oil has been used for different purposes. It is commonly known that oil is a substance that is absorbed by penetrating the skin. It was used in sacred rites in the ancient Roman civilisation and in other civilisations and cultures, and by kings mostly, although priests had the exclusive use before it was extended to the use of kings. The traditional purpose of oil is to anoint, consecrate, and to make "holy". It has been used throughout Christianity, and we see its use in all the scriptures, both in the Old and New Testaments, and has been used conjoined with the relics of the Saints. The use of oil is an ongoing tradition that has been upheld in the Eastern Church and continues until this day. It was spoken of by Jesus in the Parable of the Good Samaritan as a method for curing, while Christian tradition made similar use it by using the oil that was blessed with the relics the saints for healing.
